An insurance underwriter in Singapore typically earns between about S$4,800 and S$12,200 a month, with a median of S$6,991, according to the Ministry of Manpower’s June 2024 wage survey. Mid to senior underwriters are benchmarked at S$108,000 to S$156,000 a year including bonuses in Michael Page’s 2026 Salary Guide.

Underwriter pay varies more than many job titles suggest. A junior personal lines underwriter, a commercial property underwriter and a senior specialty or reinsurance underwriter all share the same title but sit in very different pay bands. This guide brings together the main 2026 benchmarks and explains what drives the differences.

What these numbers mean in practice

Early career

Underwriting assistants and junior underwriters generally sit towards the lower end of the ranges above. MOM’s figures for insurance and underwriting clerks, with a median of S$5,045 a month, give a sense of where support roles start, while the 25th percentile for underwriters themselves is S$4,800.

Experienced underwriters

Underwriters with their own authority and several years in a line typically sit around the middle of the bands. Randstad’s medium figure of S$9,000 a month for both life and non-life underwriting, and MOM’s 75th percentile of S$12,200, mark the upper middle of the market.

Senior and lead underwriters

Senior, lead and specialty underwriters move into annual packages that Michael Page benchmarks at S$108,000 to S$156,000 including bonuses. Heads of underwriting and Chief Underwriting Officers are paid above that, and are usually benchmarked case by case.

What drives underwriter pay in Singapore?

  • Line of business. Specialty, marine, energy, financial lines and reinsurance underwriting often sit higher than personal lines, because fewer people can write those risks.
  • Underwriting authority. The size of the risks you can write without referral is one of the clearest signals of seniority.
  • Regional scope. Many Singapore teams write business across Asia, and regional experience is valued.
  • Client segment. Randstad notes opportunities for underwriters experienced with high-net-worth clients as insurers focus on that segment.
  • Data and technology. Randstad describes insurers using predictive analytics and machine learning in underwriting, and the HRnetGroup 2026 insurance guide highlights demand for hybrid roles in AI-driven underwriting.
  • Moving employer. Randstad’s 2025 Singapore guide expected insurance job switchers to see increases of 15% to 20%, with niche technical roles potentially seeing up to 50%.

Life versus general insurance underwriting

Life underwriters assess individual applicants’ medical and financial information, while general (non-life) underwriters price property, casualty, motor, marine and specialty risks for individuals and businesses. In Randstad’s 2025 Singapore table, both share a low of S$5,000 and a medium of S$9,000 a month, with life underwriting showing a slightly higher top figure of S$13,000 against S$12,000 for non-life. At senior level the difference depends more on the specific line and authority than on the life or general split.

How Singapore compares with Hong Kong

For underwriters considering a regional move, Randstad’s 2025 Hong Kong guide gives these monthly basic salaries in HKD, excluding bonuses:

Hong Kong underwriting level Low (HK$) Middle (HK$) High (HK$)
Officer 25,000 28,000 35,000
Assistant manager 35,000 45,000 50,000
Manager 50,000 55,000 65,000
Senior manager 60,000 80,000 100,000
Director 130,000 150,000 180,000
Chief underwriter 170,000 220,000 250,000

Tips for underwriters reviewing their pay

  1. Benchmark against at least two sources, and note whether each figure is monthly or annual and whether it includes bonus.
  2. Document your authority limits, gross written premium handled and loss ratio performance. These are what hiring managers weigh.
  3. Value regional exposure and any data or analytics skills explicitly.
  4. When comparing offers, include bonus history, annual wage supplement and benefits, not just base salary.
